LASER APPLICATION IN OPERATIVE ARTHROSCOPY
Kang H.-Wook
Abstract
Operative arthroscopy has been utilized for many particular ailments, especially on knees and shoulders in the past 20 years starting from diagnostic arthroscopy in the early 70s. Many different instrumentations have been designed and utilized but none was more revolutionary than the application of laser in arthroscopic instrumentation.
Laser, which stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, has been progressing rather rapidly in scientific fields for production of energy, weaponry, socalled SDI; however, there are none more important for utilization in medicine, including laser application in orthopaedics. I will touch on the basic physics of the laser.
I have been using laser arthroscopy since 1988 and have performed around 350 cases of laser arthroscopy on the knee with excellent results. There is the debate of necessity of laser over conventional instrumentation for the cost of the instruments of laser, safety, possible complications; however, all these concerns have been eliminated by the benefits of the utilization of laser in arthroscopy.
I will discuss the technique of application of laser in the knee, availability of the instrument, and clinical results including minor complications.
